I am trying to locate a birth record for Alexander Lamb born in Clonfeacle, County Armagh or County Tyrone about 1817.

He enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Moy in 1835 (found on his attestation papers). I can't find any other records of him in Ireland but I do have his Army service record from 1835. Blackwatertown is mentioned too.

I "may" have found his parents but am hoping to find his birth record to confirm it.

Thanks for any guidance.

  • I think he was probably Church of Ireland because some of the others in my tree are Church of Scotland. His children were born in Scotland, Wales and Malta.

  • Statutory birth registration didn;t start in Ireland till 1864. Prior to that we have to rely on church baptism records, where they exist.

There are 3 main Church of Ireland congregations in Clonfeacle - Clonfeacle itself, Derrygortrevy & Moy. Sadly all 3 churches lost their early records in the 1922 fire and none has anything  before around 1869. So, sadly, you are unlikely to find any baptism, marriage or burial records for Alexander and his family,  if the family was Church of Ireland.
