Hello.  My great-grandfather, John V. Nicholson was born in Schrule, County Mayo, In January of 1861.  He immigrated to New York City about 20 years later 1881-82.  I am unable to find names of his parents or siblings.  Will be visiting Schrule/nearby areas in the spring of 2025 and would love to meet any remaining family.  Thank you for any assistance!

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a March 7 1859 baptismal record in Shrule for a John Nicholson. Father was James Nicholson and mother was Margaret Moghan. Family lived in Shrule. I also located a baptismal record for a Mary Nicholson baptized February 5 1861 in Shrule. Family lived on Clifford St. In Shrule.

I also located a January 16 1858 marriage record in the RC parish of Crossboyne which is northeast of Shrule.Groom and bride were James Nicholson and Margaret Maughan.

I looked for a death record up to 1901 for either James or Margaret Nicholson but did not find a lead. Also, James Nicholson was not in the 1901 census for Co. Mayo.

  • Hi again Roger,

I found immigration/passenger records listing John Nicholson entering The U.S. as an infant in 1863.  Mother was listed as Bridget Nicholson, age 22, married but no spouse entered.  Not sure if that helps  the search.  Thanks again!

Are you saying this is your John Nicholson or you found this record which may be connected. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for John Nicholson baptismal records with mother Bridget for all of Ireland. There were a number of records but none for Mayo near the 1861 time period.

  • Roger,

I am fairly sure Bridget is the mother of John Nicholson.  The timelines match up pretty well.  Are there any baptismal records for John/Bridget in nearby counties?  Thank you for all your help!
