Been searching forever it would seem for these two. My DNA links me to Connacht so hopefully this narrows down my search.
I have Mary Rooney aged 22 (or so) when she married John (30) in Whitwick Leicestershire in 1867. Mary has her Dad down as John ( a shoemaker) and John has his Dad down as Patsy (a labourer).
They both died in 1910 in a local mining village near me in Yorkshire. Johns witness at the wedding was a Patrick Lally. I've found a John Rooney in Leicester with his wife Margaret in Leicester at the 1861 census. Mary's not there though but other kids are, Patrick, Thomas and Michael all born Ireland. Michael in 1853.
I've found a Patrick Lally with a James Moffatt in Rainhill Merseyside 1851 and a Patrick Moffatt in Walsall in 1861 lodging with his brother James.
This is a start anyway. Hope you can help

Mark,
What was the first and surname of Mary's mother.
The County Leitrim has a number of Rooney's while there are a few in County Galway.
The surname can be found in various parts of Ireland. See Griffith's Valuation - www.askaboutireland.ie - Free
You mentioned a mining village, there was a coal mine on the border of Leitrim/Roscommon which might have influenced them to travel there? - Arigna Mines.

Thanks for the reply. Her name was Margaret if that John I found in Leicester is correct.
I started looking in Athenry area as I saw a reference to the Rooney family (including a John) in somewhere called Moanbaun.
I have always assumed Mary went to Leicester with all her family where she met John. John was a Coal Miner. They moved up to Yorkshire. That’s as much as I know
