My great-great grandparents were Martin Grace and Sarah Kearns from County Tipperary. I would love to find out more about their parents/family.

Here is what I have learned from the usual online sites:

Martin Grace born in 1820 in County Tipperary. Died on 25 August 1891 in Chicago, IL

Sarah Kearns born 1829 in County Tipperary. Died 15 March 1903 in Chicago, IL

I have a record from the Irish Catholic Parish Registers 1655-1915 that shows they were married in July 1856 in Monsea, Tipperary, Ireland. Diocese: Killaloe

It appears the marriage was witnessed by Joseph Slattery (?) and Bridget Deeggan (?)

Here are some cloudy memories I remember from my mother talking about her great grandparents way back when I was too stupid to pay better attention. But maybe it will help:

I remember the towns of Toomevara and Nenagh being mentioned.

I remember her saying that the Grace family “ran a string of ponies” - whatever that means!

I remember her saying that when Martin was a boy, he could lay in his bed and look out the window and see the Devil’s Bit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil's_Bit

Thank you for any help or hints you can provide.

  • Ann,

I wanted to verify Martin and Sarah's' birth years.

    Per RootsIreland (paid Subscription)

There was a Martin baptized Aug. 20, 1835, in Monsea parents Patrick Grace and Ellen, last name not identified, based on possible sibling records could be Kelly.

A Patrick Grace and Ellen Kelly were married in Monsea Feb. 11, 1834.

A Sarah Kern was baptized in Monsea on Nov. 6, 1836. Her parents were Michael Kern and Catherine (unidentified). There was a Catherine Stokes that married Michael Grace in 1836 in Moycarkey, Tippereay, 35 miles from Monsea. They had children around that time.

  • Ann,

A previous message posted about the Grace Family in 2019.

By the way, they might have been pony breeders.

  • Ann,

I found this on the internet

    • A group of horses used by one person or belonging to one person is commonly known as a string. The term string can also be used to refer to ponies.

  • Hello, Mary -

    Thank you for responding.

I am pretty confident of the birthdate I gave for Martin and fairly confident for the date I gave for Sarah.

  • Anne,

There are 29 trees on Ancestry with your family. Some of them show Martin was born about 1820 in Toomevara to John Grace and Sally. I did not find any supporting documentation on these trees. If you are on Ancestry you might want to contact one of the members with the Grace tree.

If you haven't, you might want to contact the Ireland Reaching Out volunteer that was mentioned in the 2019 posting above.

  • Good Morning, Mary -

I have seen the trees on Ancestry. And you’re right…none of them have supporting documentation; so like with a lot of Ancestry trees, I take it with a grain of salt. I’ve reached out to several of the folks managing the trees and they had no records.

Thanks for the link to the email for the IRO volunteers.
