Hello everyone, good morning!

I've been doing my family tree for the last 5 years o more. Somehow, I was very sure about this, but now I am doubting a bit
My great granfather Edward Higgins, son of James Higgins and Mary Ann Farrell, as it says in his marriage record here in Buenos Aires.I founnd his baptism in Ballymore on 23th of april of 1853 , as well as his siblings
Even I found a marriage record in Templemichael ( parish of Mary Ann) from James Higgins and Mary Ann Farrell in 1849
Till  now I always thought that James was born in Granard, on 1 nov of 1829 from Edward Higgins and Catherine Brady, not finding any siblings to James
But a couple of days ago, I found another James Higgins, born in 1829 in Ballymore, to Thomas Higgins and Mary or Margaret Scott. And at least two or three siblings same parish. I feel that could be this James born in Ballymore make more sense to be my ancestor that the one born in Granard? knowing that my great granpa and his siblings were born in Ballymore also, like this James I've founnd recently
Attached to this message are both baptism records of the James I mentioned before and a screenshot of my tree

I will appreciate any thoughts about this,

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Diana!

The only 1849 marriage record that I located was in the RC parish of Shrule in Co. Longford not Templemichael. Mary Anne was listed as Marian.

The RC parish of Shrule is much closer to the border with Co. Westmeath and by extension Ballymore RC parish.

I agree that the 1829 James Farrell record is more likely your ancestor.

  • Thank you so much, Roger

If I may ask... is there any marriage record too the parents of this James Higgins? Thomas Higgins and Mary or Margaret Scott?

  • Diana,

The 1829 birth record for James Higgins is from Westmeath, not Longford. The RC parish is Ballymore, and that parish's marriage records began in 1839, so I there will not be a marriage record for Thomas and Mary/Margaret Scott. BTW, Roots Ireland transcribes her name as Mary, but I think the original record shows Margaret as "Margt"....I have seen a lot of mistakes in translation from the original with this forename.

  • Diana,

I found the following children of Thomas and Mary Scott (Roots Ireland)...one record shows her first name as Margaret...so back to the translation issue.

Patrick 9 Mar 1826 to Margaret Scot & Thomas Higgens

James 14 Jan 1829 to Mary Scott & Thomas Higgins (he probably died young, thus the next child named James)

James 27 Jul 1831 to Mary Scott & Thomas Higgins

Thomas 2 Aug 1831 to Mary Scott & Thomas Higgins

(the above two are probably twins that were baptized a few days apart, maybe??)

Owen 11 Mar 1837 to Mary Scott & Thomas Higgins

And if you want to expand the family further, there is a record of Mary Higgins 17 Aor 1834 to Owen Higgins and Catherine Scot.

So, it looks like perhaps brothers, Thomas and Owen, married sisters, Mary and Catherine. Another possibility is cousins.....

  • this is amazing! because, my great granfather Edward Higgins, married here to Eliza Barrett who are the daughter of Edward Barrett and Mary Higgins... and in the marriage record says that they are 3rd consanguinity related... that is one of the reasons I was looking to more siblings to my James Higgins, father of my Edward Higgins... and to find the link on that cousins link between my great granparents

Again, you are amazingly helpful! and so kind to answer all of our questions!

Have a great weekend and a big hug to all of you for your wonderful work, from the south hemisphere! irish descents but always trying to find our roots in our ancestors land!

  • Yes, must be the 1831 son. I will poke around on Roots Ireland to look for more children to Owen Higgins...BTW, my husband and son just returned from Buenos Aires as they went to the Antarctica, and they said what an amazingly beautiful city Buenos Aires is...especially the beautiful trees!

  • Diana,

I could not find any more children for Owen Higgins. I also like to look at baptism sponsors to try to piece together families...not always certain of the relationships though. Here are some names that appear: Ellen Higgins, John Higgins, Judith Scot, John Scot, Ann Scot.

I'm curious to know what took your ancestors all the way to Argentina? Seems like a very long distance from Ireland!

  • Hope your husband and son had a great time down here, it is one of the most beautiful months to visit... and the lovely trees, I bet the were amaze with the jaranda's flowers, all violet colours.

My great granfather Edward Higgins , came with one of his sisters,Anne.. and by the time he traveled here, his father was death, and his little brother james Jr had to care for his mom, and the farm. You have to think not only in the distance with the ship, but the tidtance from the port of Buenos Aires, to Mercedes city were most of the irish settled, From the port to that city you have 110 kilometers. I cant even think travel like that at that time

here you have a little video of Mercedes, today... hope you like it
