He was aged 23 and went to stay with his cousin, Michael McNamara on Blakely Avenue, in New Haven, CT. Michael McNamara was living as a boarder with a number of other Irish labourers (some of whom were also from Tulla) and working as an iron moulder. It appears that he returned to Ireland, but made the voyage over to New Haven again.
John Butler arrived on 1st August, 1923 onboard the ship Adriatic single aged 43. He left behind his mother Mrs. B. Butler of Blama Tulla. Upon arrival he intended to go to his sister Mrs M. D. McNamara, 507 Lombard Street, New Haven, Connecticut.

John lived with his sister, Mary Butler McNamara and her family at 307 Lombard Street, New Haven for many years. He became a chauffeur for the New Haven Clock Factory where he continued to work for most of his life until his retirement. In the 1930 Census, Mary was living with her sons and her brother, John. Mary Butler McNamara, wife of Michael D. McNamara died August 17, 1933 aged 62. After Mary’s death in 1933, John continued to live with Daniel McNamara until 1937 when it appears that he moved to 43 Bassett Street. John became a naturalised citizen in 1936 as per his naturalisation papers. He continued to reside in New Haven where it is believed that he died in the 1950s.
