Back to List

From her obituary published in the Yankton Press and Dakotaian in late May 1894, Catherine (Murnan) Stanage, passed away, presumably at her home near Yankton, South Dakota on 21 May 1894. Family papers show that she was a daughter of Patrick Murnan and Mary Whaton/Whelan/Whalan.

The photo show Catherine with her second husband, Charles Stanage (1833 - 1903). Behind her and to the right is William John Cooney (1861 - 1928), the only child from her first marriage to Michael Cooney (~1819 - 05 Mar 1869). Assuming that William was about 10 years old at the time, and combined with the presence of a baby who is probably Anna Stanage (02 Apr 1870 - 27 Feb 1934), the first child of Catherine and Charles, the date of the image is estimated to be late 1870 or early 1871. The young male just below her son William must be James Stanage (1862 - 1925), a son of her sister Bridget (Murnan) Stanage and John Stanage. According to Catherine Grace Cooney, a grandaughter of Michael Cooney, WillJohn Cooney and James Stanage were close friends as they grew up.
