David Carson emigrated to America in about 1784 where he settled with fellow immigrants in the State of Pennsylvania at the settlement of Greencastle, named after Greencastle in Donegal. He returned to Ireland and married Jean Oliver of the Parish of Glendermot, daughter of James Oliver and Jean Fisher, in 1788 and brought her with him to America.
Both David and Jean were born in Northern Ireland of Scottish ancestry. In 1784, he emigrated to America and settled in Greencastle, PA. His letter of recommendation from his pastor is saved. He returned to Northern Ireland and married Jean Oliver and they returned to Greencastle in 1788. Their wedding certificates are also saved. They resided in Greencastle until their deaths. Later, they and their daughter, Elizabeth, were reburied in Mercersburg PA, which was the home of their son, James Oliver Carson. The fact that they named their eldest son William and their only daughter Elizabeth probably means that David's parents were William and Elizabeth. In the Ireland 1766 Religious Census, a William Carson is named as Presbyterian in the Derry townland of County Tyrone but no family is listed so a definite connection cannot be made.
They were covenanters which was a very strict sect of the Presbyterian Church but at Greencastle, joined the Associate Presbyterian Church and placed themselves under the care of Rev. John Lind for whom some future Carson men would be named.
