Edmond (Edward) Slattery 1844

Back to List

While Edmond isn't directly related to me, he was married to my great-grandfather's sister.

Edmond was born on Mar 19 1844 to Michael Slattery and Mary Heelan. They lived in the townland of Baggotstown, Knockainy, Co. Limerick. In 1866, when Edmond was 22, he emigrated to the United States.

The story goes that two days after he arrived in America, Edmond got a job in the Oliver Ames Shovel Company in Easton, Massachusetts where he worked for over 50 years. There is an article in the Concord Weekly Enterprise from May 21 1924 about Edmond, or Edward as he was known as in America. 1924 was the 58th aniversary of Edmond's working for the Shovel Company without a single sick day - what an achievement!!

Edmond married Margaret Kearney on Nov 13 1877 in Easton. They had 5 children - Mary (1879-1892), Winnifred (1881-1925), Ellen (1884-1972), Margaret (1886-1891) and Alice (1888-1983).

Edmond died on Nov 3 1933 and his wife died on Apr 18 1894.
