Hi Dennis, all my Turley relatives come from the Newry area. I have an extensive tree on Ancestry. If you give me the name of a Turley relative I can let you know if it is one of mine. Best, Myra Turleyu

Hello Myra, thank you for your response. How about John Turley, b. 1649 Newry, married Anna Craugh, emigrated 1708? Or his son also John b. 1660 Newry, emigrated 1681?

Wow, you certainly have Turleys going back in time. I don't have any this far back. Would love to exchange info. Where did you get records? This is invaluable. My Turley's are all from Co. Down. My father was born in Rathfriland and my grandfather lived on the Rathfriland-Newry Road in Lurgancahone. As did my great grandfather. Your Turleys look like they all emigrated. To where? Australia? Scotland? Canada? America?

Myra, I am using Ancestry.com too. My mother’s Turley lineage goes back to Paul Turley b. 1705 in Fairfax Co, Virginia. I found the early Turleys in Newry through Ancestry, including their emigration to Virginia. Now I’m trying to determine if there is a connection between these groups. All tentative so far, of course—work in progress.

I did a bit of reading and learned that those who emigrated to America in 1681 were mostly Ulster Presbyterians from Scotland. These Scots had been caught in years and years of war between the Catholic and Protestant factions supporting the Crown. They came to Ulster between 1609 and 1690 during Oliver Cromwell's Plantation of Ulster. Since you know that John was born in Newry in 1949 you might want to focus a bit of research in Scotland in the first half of the 17th century. My Turleys were Catholic and native to Ireland. And I could be completely wrong. But maybe worth a wee bit of time.
