As far as I know, Edward was from Toormakeadie Co Mayo exact date of birth unknown. He was originally married to a Mary Moran by whom he had two daughters, Catherine and Bridget. This is known from Catherine's death record in Scotland in 1877. Edward married Mary Welsh on 22 June 1851 at St Mary's chapel Stirling. I have not found him in the 1851 census in Scotland so assume so far that he must have arrived not long before he married. His new wife, Mary Welsh, was in Stirling 1851 Census lodging with James and Sarah McEwen who were the witnesses at her marriage to Edward. I can only assume Mary Moran died before 1851. Edward and his second wife, Mary Welsh, had three children: Mary (1852-1853), Margaret (1857-1907) and Edward (1860-1942). This younger Edward is my great-grandfather. The elder Edward Welsh died in Stirling (in the Raploch) 9 March 1865. Place of burial unknown but he is commemorated in the Welsh memorial in the Valley Cemetery, Stirling. From his death record it is known his parents were John Welsh and Catherine Hastings. I know nothing more about them.

  • Lovely to see your comment Sharron. I would be interested to know how you are related to Edward Welsh (died 1865, Stirling, Scotland). He is my 2x Great grandfather through his second wife, Mary Welsh (that was her birth surname, possibly a second cousin, her parents were Thomas Welsh and Mary Higgins but I don't know where she was from in Co. Mayo). I know all descendants of Edward's son, Edward (my great grandfather) and have managed to trace some of his daughter Catherine's family (she married John Sutherland in Scotland and had children Margaret, Robert, Agnes and Mary). Catherine died 1877, birth estimated to about 1846 from census and other statutory records in Scotland. However I cannot trace the elder Edward's daughter Bridget (known from 1861 and 1871 censuses in Stirling). I believe that Mary Moran had a brother, Patrick, who died 27 April 1890 in Stirling. His parents were Walter Moran and Julia Lynch (from his death record).

I really want to find out more about Edward (died 1865) in Ireland.

  • Hello Frances, We have corresponded before, on Ancestry. My dad is a weak DNA match to you. His 2nd great grandfather was John Welsh, brother of Edward Welsh (born about 1810). You have some very nice family pictures on your Ancestry page.

  • Hi Frances, we have corresponded before, on Ancestry. My dad is a weak DNA match to you, through his mother Annie Welsh. His 2nd great grandfather was John Welsh, who was brother to your Edward  Welsh born 1810.

You have some very nice family pictures in your Ancestry tree. I don't have any of those.
