Eliza Madill was born sometime before 1824 in the townland of Kilmore West, Parish of Ematris, County Monaghan, Ireland. We know this because at the time of her marriage to James Stewart in 1845 she was "of full age", ie. at least 21 years of age. The marriage record stated that her father was "not living". He was Thomas Madill of Kilmore West. We have a Tithe Book record for a Thomas Madill in West Killmore in 1833 on a holding of 3 acres. This was most likely her father.
Eliza also had a brother, Joseph Madill, born circa 1809. Joseph Madill is listed on the Griffith's Valuation as the occupier of Lot 11A&B, in Kilmore West, with a house, office and land of 3 acres, so it seems he took over the family farm. Joseph Madill married twice, first to Sarah Thompson (1815-1849) and in 1850 he married Sarah Wright (1829-?). He had 5 children. One of his daughters, Esther, married James Dawson and moved to New York.
Eliza Madill married James Stewart on June 24,1845. At that time, James was "of full age" (21 years or older) and living in the townland of Cornawall, Parish of Aghabog. His father was Thomas Stewart, a farmer. Eliza Madill, was also of full age and a spinster. She was from the nearby townland of Kilmore, in the Parish of Ematris. Her father was deceased, Thomas Madill, a farmer.
Eliza Madill Stewart died on Thursday, 22 September 1864 in Cornawall, Co Monaghan, Ireland. The cause of death was Tuberculosis (phthisis) and pneumonia, 8 months, certified. Samuel Stewart, son of deceased, was present at death and acted as the informant for the record. His residence was also Cornawall. From this record we learned that James and Eliza had a son named Samuel. Also from this record we learned that James died before her since she is listed as a widow.
