  • Ms. Custer,

I ran across your post as I was searching for my relatives and found it so interesting.   My name is Shannon Maher.  My Great Great Great Grandparents were James Maher & Ellen (Feehily) Maher.  James & Elllen Maher had a son John Maher  (my great great grandfather) born 1855 and died 1914.  This John Maher  was married to Mary Catherine (Hopping) Maher born 1863 and died in 1938... They had a son John G Maher (my great grandfather) born 1882 and died 1952.  John G Maher married Emma (Braun) Maher born 1888 and died 1979.  John and Emma had a son Elmer M Maher (my grandfather) born 1910 and died 1989.  My Grandfather, Elmer married Loretta Lyons.  Loretta (Lyons) Maher was born 1914 and died 1979.  Elmer and Loretta Maher had a son, Charles Maher.  Charles was my father.  He was born in 1936 and died in 2004.  The entire family are buried near one another at St Joseph's new cemetery on Foley road in Cincinnati Ohio.  I currently work in Springfield Ohio but work in Cincinnati Ohio.  My father Charles Maher was born in Delhi Hills Cincinnati.  My Grandfather Elmer Maher was the district manager for United Parcel Delivery service for the Cincinnati region for many years.    I plan on visiting my father's grave at St. Joseph's new cemetery in Cincinnati soon and I plan on visiting all the graves of my distant relatives.  Luckily, the cemetery website has very good records of plot numbers and actually has all the pictures of the headstones so they should be easy to find.  So, it seems we are distantly related.  I've never been to Ireland but not that I have traced where my relatives actually come from I plan on visiting soon.

    Sincerely,

    Shannon Maher

  • Hi Shannon,

I am replying to your post about you being the daughter of Charles Maher. It was good to hear from you. I am the daughter of Donald Maher who was the youngest brother of Elmer Maher. Your father was my 1st cousin, so you are my 1st cousin 1x removed. I have a very extensive family tree for the Maher Family. If you wish to have access to it just send your email address to me at dcuster2015@yahoo.com and I will send you an invitation. I started working on my tree right after my mother, Antoinette (Toni) Maher passed away in 2006. We found a folder with geneaology information that she had been working on. We didn't even know that she was looking into it.

I have been in touch with your Uncles Jim & Jerry Maher over the years. I met all the sons except for your Dad when our family went to Philadelphia to visit Uncle Elmer & Aunt Babe. I also flew to Florida and stayed with them when they lived in St. Petersburg.

I got in contact with the North Tipperary Genealogy Center in Nenagh in 2016 to get some more information on the Maher & Feehily families before my husband & I went to Ireland. I was able to get the names of all the children on both sides but no information except for marriage dates for the 3rd great- grandparents. The records for County Tipperary begin in 1800, nothing before then unfortunately. Jerry Maher told me that his dad Elmer hired someone to research the Maher family in Ireland. He supposedly got a report back and could trace them back to 1600's. When I told the Genealogy Center Researcher that, she said it was impossible since there were no records before 1800 (for Tipperary) because they were all destroyed. Unfortunately, neither Jerry nor Jim knew what happened to the report.

We were in Ireland for 14 days in 2016 and saw a lot of sites from Dublin, to Belfast to see the Titanic Museum, the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, down to Londonderry (Derry) to see the walled city, Donegal, Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Dingle on the Dingle Peninsula (gorgeous) and then on to Tipperary. While in Tipperary, my husband and I went to Templetuohy, Co. Tipperary and saw the Tullowmacjames property where the family, as tenant farmers, lived. Couldn't see the house because it was way back on the property. There is a small abandoned castle in the front,  owned by some rich Mahers who are no relation. While in the town I spoke with the church secretary for Sacred Heart Church where all of our family members went.  She was busy at the time and gave me her email address to contact her. She was able to determine that Mary & Andrew Maher moved from Tullowmacjames to Lissanure in the mid 1850's and continued as tenant farmers. They were not hit as hard as a lot of the other 'potato famine' families. Andrew died abt.1862 and the property was transferred to his wife, Mary. She died in 1872 and her son, Matthew, took over. He left the property to sail to the US in abt 1892. The secretary sent me photos of the house where they resided in Lissanure, Co. Tipperary. Many of the families moved to  the southern portion of Co.Tipperary. Others moved to southern Ireland and over to England to escape the famine.

I went back to Ireland with my sister Peggy in June 2018 for 10 days. We flew into Dublin, spent 2 days there and then on to Galway for 2 days. I had previously contacted the editor of the Tipperary Star newspaper in the town of Thurles in Co. Tipperary. She did an online interview with me and put a nice large editorial in the newspaper stating that I was looking for any Mahers related to our family. 3 days later I received an email from a Marianne Maher Cleary who resides in Thurles. She was the great-great granddaughter of Matthew Maher, who was the younger brother of James who was my 2nd great grandfather who came to the US in 1850. She knew we were coming back to Ireland to visit again and invited us to dinner at her house which was absolutely lovely. The next day she had us meet her at the Horse & Jockey Club in Thurles and brought more cousins with her for us to meet. It was really quite lovely to meet everyone.

We finished up after Thurles by going to Waterford (Crystal museum & factory-great tour), Kilkenny (refurbished castle there), a famous gardens, and Cobh in Cork County where the passengers boarded the Titanic before it sailed.  I went back to Dingle again with my sister this time. It is a really a cool little town with great Irish bands especially at John Benny's Pub. We then flew home out of the Shannon airport instead of Dublin. It was a much nicer airport to fly out of. You almost have to stay there for 3-4 weeks to see all of Ireland. It is beautiful over there and well worth the trip! Both Dublin & Shannon Airports have Customs to go through which  eliminated going through Customs in the USA. So nice!

I gathered a lot of information for my family tree and you are more than welcome to the info and photos. Again, If you wish to have access to it just send your email address to me at dcuster2015@yahoo.com and I will send you an invitation to view my tree on Ancestry. If you do get to take photos of the headstones at New St. Joseph Cemetery and don't belong to Ancestry,  you can send them to me if you want and I can post them to the appropriate people. I was on my way down to Cincy and was going to go to the cemetery with my brother, but they got hit by a powerful storm with 80 mph winds. It wiped out the electric all over Cincy including the gates to the cemetery. So I ended up turning around and coming back home to Cleveland and have never gone back to the cemetery since. Maybe one of these days!

    Best Wishes!

    Donna (Maher) Custer
