Gilbert retired from the Army in 1837.He married Sarah Green from Ballinakill in the parish of Dunkerrin/ Moneygall in 1841. Sarah was a Catholic and Gilbert converted to the Catholic faith on his marriage. They lived at Ballydonagh , near Cloughjordan and they had nine children- Jane. Johanna, James. ElizaMary, Margaret, Myra,. John, Gilbert, and William. Six siblings Jane, Johanna, Margaret, John Gilbert and William all emigrated to Illinois. James remained in Ballydonagh and his descendants live in Cloughjordan. Eliza Mary married Martin Donohue and their descendants live in Templemore and Thurles
