James emigrated to Australia on the clipper ship “Champion of the Seas” arriving at Hobson’s Bay, now Williamstown, in Victoria on 18th November 1864. With him was his wife Rebecca, his four sons, Thomas (8 yrs), Robert (7 yrs), William (2 yrs) and baby, John James just 3 months old, and James’ mother Ann, a widow aged 65. A fifth son Henry was born in 1867 in Miners Rest, Victoria, but died of diphtheria just 10 years later.
The family eventually settled at Tourello, in the gold fields area of Ballarat, Victoria where James became a very successful farmer. When he died in 1891, his estate was valued at £1094. A considerable achievement for a man who at the time of his marriage in 1855, was working as a farm labourer for Rev Henry Tottenham at Dundiven Glebe, Co Tyrone. He is buried in the Coghills Creek Cemetery with his wife Rebecca and his two sons Henry and John James
The farm at Tourello was eventually inherited by James’ 3rd son William. Thomas became a farmer and later Shire Secretary for Rodney Shire a position he held for 30 years. Robert was storekeeper and lived in the Melton area. John James died of consumption aged 22 years in 1889.
