James Sheridan 1800 : Short Biography

I have been told my 3rd great grandparets were James Duffy and Catherine Sheridan (I have no additional info on Catherine). They were married in Kilconduff, Swinford, January 6, 1814. Catherine might have been a cousin or sister to your James. Per the tithe applotment, in 1833 there was a Thomas Sheridan leasing in Kinaff, Kilconduff. Per the Griffith Valuation, in 1856 there were James leasing land in Treanlaur, Thomas and James leasing in Knockbrack, and Thomas and James leasing in Kinaff.

There is a tree on Ancestry with a James Sheridan born about 1810 in  Swinford. He married Eleanor (Ellen) Durkan of Swinford February 20, 1830 in Swinford. Records of children baptisms show both Kinaff and Knockbrack as addresses.

Re Catherine Sheridan m. James Duffy 1814.  Yes she could have been a cousin (or sister?) of the James Sheridan I've recorded here. James Sheridan of Knockbrack was my great great grandfather. So, it's possible/likely that you and I are related.

The tree you have found on Ancestry is mine I think. I have the same info as you from Tithe Applotment Books and Griffiths as well as censuses etc. etc.

The James in Knockbrack (in Griffith's) is I believe the same as the one in Kinaff (the house and some land is in Knockbrack while additional land rented in Kinaff - that's what I make of the detailed entries anyway).

At the time of the Tithe Applotment book, things look different because - apart from the passage of time - this earlier survey did not, as I understand it, identify subsidiary renters of land that was subdivided, but only the "chief renter." Griffith's goes a bit further (but not all the way) in this direction I notice. Additionally, at the time of the Tithe Applotment Book for this area (1833), the townland names had not been "standardised" shall we say - or at least that is my understanding - and Kinaff/Knockbrack are treated as one I think. In fact, throughout records from that time up to modern days, I have found that Kinaff and Knockbrack are used a bit confusingly. Knockbrack is very small, and adjacent (like a bolt-on) to the larger Kinaff. So, you will find Kinaff cited instead of Knockbrack in some records (but certainly not all). This was even the case when I used to visit the area back in the 1960s and 70s as a child on summer holidays with my father (who had been born there in 1921): even he would sometimes refer to it as Kinaff - where he went to school - and at other times Knockbrack, where he lived. 

My main research data is held on my own computer (using Legacy Family Tree program) but I occasionally share it online via refreshing my tree on Ancestry (and in the past I've used Genes Reunited). I only recently reated the stub of an account on IrelandXO to see what it was like - and was pleased to get your message.

I live in England and am slowly writing a book about our family history (for the benfit of children, grandchildren etc.). Please let kne know if you wish to connect  - via Accestry for example?

Hi Mary, I haven't done my own DNA test but my son and my borther have. It was 100% Ireland/Connacht/Mayo - although I have to be honest and say I don't really understand how the science works. 

I'm not familiar with the Durkans of Cuilmore (I don't think) but I'll head over to Ancestry later today and see if we can share our trees.
