James Stewart was born ~1820 in Co Monaghan, Ireland. We have no birth record for James, or death record, as he lived and died before civil registration began in Ireland in 1864.  The death records of  two of his sons, Thomas and Joseph, who emigrated to Canada, named James Stewart and Eliza Madill as their parents. Thomas's death record stated their birthplace as Cornawall, Ireland.

At that time, he was "of full age" (21 years or older) and living in the townland of Cornawall, Parish of Aghabog. His father was Thomas Stewart, a farmer.  There is a Thomas Stewart in Cornawall, Parish of Aghabog, in the Tithe applotment records and on Griffith's Valuation, on Lot 1A &B.

James married Eliza Madill on June 21, 1845 in the Cootehill Registrar's office. James's wife, Eliza Madill, was also of full age and a spinster. She was from the nearby townland of Kilmore, in the Parish of Ematris. Her father was deceased, Thomas Madill, a farmer.

James Stewart died before 1864 in Cornawall, Co Monaghan, Ireland. We have no death record for James, but we know from his wife Eliza's death registration record that he died before her.

James and Eliza had 5 children that we know of, Thomas (Jun 6 1848-24 Apr 1933), Margaret (1849-?) Elizabeth Jane (1849-24 Apr 1886), Samuel (1851-?), Joseph (May 16 1856- Sep 1 1927). They all emigrated to Canada and the United States.

  • I too am researcing the Stewarts of Cornawall, Aghabog. I descend from an Archibald Stewart (1801-1879) who was, I believe, a brother of Thomas.

    Other siblings were John (1802-1886), a sister who married Samuel Guinn and (?) Robert who farmed at Mullaghmore in the same parish.

    I have been unable to trace their father. Have you any ideas? john.

  • John;

    Great to hear from you. I would love to collaborate with you and find out more about your tree. I have not been able to find out much about James's father, Thomas Stewart, (~1795-1870), other than the Griffith's and Tithe records, and the fact that he was named on James's marriage certificate. I have done some family tree construction on John Stewart (1802-1886) who was on Lot 8 of Cornawall, and whom I agree, was probably Thomas's brother.

    I was not aware of a brother Alexander, or a sister, (although we wondered if the Ellen Stewart, on Griffiths valuation in Cornawall might be a sister or sister-in-law) I was also not aware of a  brother Robert, that you mentioned.   Where did Archibald Stewart live, and how did you make the connection to the Cornawall Stewart's?

    My family trees are on Ancestry if you wish to have a look. It is under my username Brenda Stewart. It is currently public.
