John Drake was christened in Granard, county Longford, on 12 June 1831. His parents are George Drake (ca.1792-?) and (Mary?) Catherine Gorman (ca.1796-1866).

He has three known older brothers: Patrick (b. ca.1821), Thomas (chr. 1826), and George (chr. 1828); and at least one potential brother, Terence (chr. 1829).

John married Ann (Dadley?) sometime before 1858, by which point they had moved to Hulme, Manchester, county Lancashire, England. They had three children there: Catherine (“Kate”, ca.1858-?), George (ca.1860-1932), and John (ca.1863-?). They moved to Brooklyn, New York, in April 1864; and had two more children there: Ann (ca.1866-?) and Francis (“Frank”, ca.1869-?).

John was a carpenter, like his father; and more specifically, a joiner.
