Migrated to/Born in USA

My paternal (on my father's mother's side) 2nd great grandfather John Edward Dargan Sr. immigrated to the USA in February 1847 on the ship Sardinia. He brought his whole family with him and, surprisingly, they all survived the voyage.

He has an interesting claim to fame as he was included in a collection of the Ripley's Believe it or Not due to the fact that he lived in 3 centuries. He was born in 1799 in Clonbroney Parish, County Longford and died in 1901 in Riceville, Iowa. I can not find any information about his parents. Everything stops with him. If anyone can find more information on him I would greatly appreciate it. I realize records from the 1700's might be difficult to find but thought I'd try here.

Thank you,

Annie Sloan Cedarleaf

P.S. the photo I have included is a picture on him on his 100th birthday.

    Annie,

I see an Edward Dargan recorded at Drummeel Townland, Clonbroney Civil Parish, County Longford, Ireland in the Tithe Applotment Books of County Longford in 1826. This is probably John Edward Dargan's father. What a great age John Edward Dargan lived to. The world he left in 1901 was certainly a very different place to the world he was born into in 1799.

I do not see any Dargans recorded at Drummeel Townland in my 1854 Griffith's Primary Valuation index book, by which time your Dargan family had emigrated to the U.S.

    Hoping this is of interest.

    All the Best,

  • There is a wonderful Findagrave memorial for him that has an obituary posted for him. I hope that you have seen it, but if not, it also has a photo of him. The link is: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/65958570/john-edward-dargan

There are five "photo" attachments to the memorial, so you have to go to the PHOTOS "tab" to see all the photos attached, one of which is the obituary.

  • Thank you! yes, I have seen this information and photos. Do you have any suggestions for finding info before 1800? He was born in 1799 but I do not  know who his parents were.
