Australia

John Ryan born around 1797 somewhere in Tipperary married Julia Shanahan in 1826 in Curraduff near Templemore where he was farming leasing around 10 acres of land.

He came to Australia in 1841 with Julia and his children Ellen (1827) Thomas (1830) Ann (1833) James (1836) and Julia (1839). His son Timothy (1828) never came to Australia so we are guessing he must have died early.

Once in Australia, John and Julia had another three children they lived in the Geelong area in Victoria until around the 1870s when they moved to the Colac area. After Julia died in 1880 John moved in with his son James who was living in Watchem near Birchip in Victoria.   He lived there until he died in 1892.

Still trying to find who his parents were and whether he had siblings so the search goes on.

Can update this now I recently have a large DNA match and believe that we have found descendant of John's brother Patrick.   Still looking for any of the others

  • I was fascinated to read of this John and Julia Ryan -- my great-great-grandparents were also named John and Julia Ryan (although I'm not certain of their home county in Ireland).  They also would have been contemporary to these two Ryans!  Mine emigrated to the U.S. sometime in the 1840s or 1850s, and settled in Dayton, Ohio.

Alas, the names John and Julia Ryan are so common, it's been like trying to find a needle in a haystack......!

  • I dont know if there is a connection or not but we have an Anastasia Honora Ryan (Mostly went by "Nora") b. 1811 who married a  Martin Hennessy b. 1797 who married in the Parish of Drom, Tipperary in 1827  Their son Richard Hennessy was baptised August 29, 1830 in Templemore Parish but it said they were livingi n Curraduff. A parish priest years ago told us Nora and Martin were second cousins but we dont know why he said that. We have no documentation.  Dont know if there could be a connection there or not, but its possible.  Martin and Nora immigrated to the US around 1854 and lived in New York State until they died in the 1860s.

  • My GG grandparents also came from Tipperary.  Johannah Ryan married John Dwyer or maybe O'Dwyer but he died shortly before the family was to migrate to

Australia.  They did migrate and arrived in Australia around 1853 although this has never been confirmed with any certainity.   I wonder if there is a connection?

  • So many Ryans and so many mysteries.  Mary Ryan was my maternal g/grandmother who married Ambrose Delany (also a Tipperary man from Nenagh) in Melbourne (Aust) in 1867.  Mary and Ambrose ran hotels on the goldfields variously at Scotchman's Lead and Gordon (in the vicinity of Ballarat) and both died at Gordon.

Mary's mother and father were John Joseph Ryan and Ellen Fogarty.  I understand that they had about 12 children between 1828 and 1851; Mary was born around 1845.  With such large families the incidence of marrying second cousins may have been more prevalent than we think.  Any intelligence on John Joseph Ryan and his other children would be most welcome.

  • Interesting the mention of Hennessy - there was a Daniel Ryan and Judith Hennessy who married in Templemore in the late 1820s their daughter Ellen was born in Curraduff in 1830.   It is a name I am researching as there was a Hennessy sponsor to some of John and Julia's children.

Also interesting is the mention of Gordon.   John's nephew John (son of John's brother Patrick) who married Catherine Tierney moved to Gordon in the 1870s and raised their family there.   Certainly lots of leads that will take some research.

  • Leonie Loveday - I have a Timothy Ryan and his wife Alice Fogarty (born abt 1822 in Tipperary; possibly Cashel) arriving in Sydney Australia in 1840.  Alice's parents were Daniel Fogarty (Foggerty) and Mary.  Timothy was born about 1818, son of Francis Ryan and Judy Kennedy.  Timothy came to Australia with his brother Patt and his wife Mary Carr (parents Malachy and Mary Carr) who were from Silvermines, Tipperary.   Hard to tell if there is any connection between your Ryan and Fogarty.

  • I am sure they would meet somewhere - but with so many common names it is so very difficult to trace.  I think I have been fortunate to get back as far as I have.

  • One of my direct ancestors is John (Johannis) Dwyer who was born circa 1827 in Tipperary. At the age of 22 he immigrated to South Australia arriving 1850 aboard Sea Queen with his older brother Michael. There is some possibility they were born in Bansha-Kilmoyler. If correct, his parents were likely to be Michael Dwyer and Johanna (Joan) Ryan who appear to have had 5 children (Margaret (Peggy) 1821, Joan 1823, Michael 1827, John 1828 and Bridget 1831.

I suspect lots of Tipperary people around that time named Michael and John Dwyer so I hope I am on the right tack. Assuimg I am right, then I'd love to take it back at least one more generation and discover the parents of both Michael Dwyer and Johanna Ryan.

John Dwyer met an Irish orphan girl, Ellen Dalton, sent to South Australia (Earl Grey Scheme) and married her in 1852 Adelaide. From them come loads of descendants scattered across South Australia, New South Wales, Western Australia etc.

Could the John Ryan born 1797 featured abive be related to my Johanna Ryan?

  • Barry I doubt that Johanna is related to John Ryan as John lived in Templemore Tipperary however I do have another Ryan line which did come from Bansha and she could certainly be related to them.   Because the Irish records can be difficult to track and I think with the Bansha Ryans I have traced them back to about the early 1800s but I cannot guarantee that the information is correct.   One thing that will tell you is a DNA test it will at least give you a better idea of their relationship.    If you want more information on my Bansha Ryans you can contact me on sue@glendalong.com.au

  • 11 May 1837, parish of Loughmore, Tipperary. You can search for it on RootsIreland, which has a connection to the register page. Good luck!

  • I have Margaret Ryan from Killea Co Tipperary who was born in 1845, She emigrated to Australia and went to Allansford near Warrnambool where she met and married my great grandfather James Traynor. There are so many Ryans, expecially in Tipperary and maybe all related. I also have another Margaret Ryan on my father's side who was born in Limerick.

  • Biddy - Killea is very close to Curraduff where I know the Ryans farmed so it is certainly possible and there is a link to Killea with my Ryan family I guess it will be a matter of research to try and figure it out you are always welcome to contact me direct on sue@glendalong.com.au I am always happy to work with others

  • SueRyan,

My Margaret Ryan's parents were Anthony Ryan and Anne Quinn. The sponsers at her baptism were John Omara and Eliza Shaughnessy. Margaret had 9 siblings one of whom is Michael Ryan who was baptized on 24 September in Killea with sponsers being Richard Quinn and Bgt Mara.  He may also have come to Australia with Margaret as there was a Michael on the same ship.

Anne Quinn's parents were Timothy Quinn and Mary Byrne. Her sponser/informant at her baptism was Elizabeth Cuneen.  Anne Quinn was baptised on 7 april 1817. We visited Templemore a few years ago and got some of this information from the RC church. That is all the information that I have about the Ryans in that area. Biddy.
