John Sweeney was born in Mayo Ireland in circa 1839 his military papers stated Swainsford (spelt that way) I take it to mean Swinford. On his marriage certificate to Mary Donovan in April 1874 Fermoy Workhouse Chapel where he was stationed in the army his father is listed as Patrick Sweeney Labourer. He joined the army in LIverpool in 1857, on some census papers when he lived in Lancashire he has just listed place of birth Mayo. He died in Preston 1917. He served in British army for over twenty years as a Groom on some paperwork. He was in the 33rd a foot and 35th a foot.
He received on 1 Apr 1861 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India, the Indian Mutiny medal Service number 486, 35th Foot Royal Sussex regiment.
