Stayed in Ireland

Margaret is my 2x great grandmother. She married David Fitzgerald 28 Feb 1865. From a FamilySearch Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898 record, David’s father was John Fitzgerald and Margaret’s father was John Carrol. The event place was Bruree, Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland.

Margaret baptized 19 Apr 1845 in Bruree, County Limerick, Ireland. Parish variants are listed as Rockhill, Rockhill Bruree. Parents are John Carroll and Margaret Keane. One of the sponsors is listed at Patrick Carroll who I take to be John’s brother.

Margaret had two siblings that I’ve identified.

Michael baptized 3 Oct 1846 at the same place and parish.

Johanna baptized 20 Mar 1849 at the same place and parish.

Margaret and David had six children from my research.

John born 31 Oct 1866 in Bruree, County Limerick, Ireland. Emigrated to US in 1891.

David baptized 26 Apr 1869 in Raymondstown, Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland.

Nellie (Ellen) baptized in Bruree on 12 Oct 1871 in Bruree, County Limerick, Ireland. Emigrated to US in 1891. (My great grandmother)

Patrick baptized 31 May 1874. Birth 13 May 1874 in Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland. Emigrated to US in 1895.

Mary born 1877 or 1880. Depends on if you trust a civil or church record. Born in Raymondstown, Limerick, Ireland

Richard born about 1869.

Based on an Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 Margaret may have died in the last quarter of 1917.

  • My Gt Grandfather was John Carroll (birth taken from Marriage Cert to be 1844, but not sure of that).  He travelled to Australia (Qld) and married Margaret McDonnell (b. Carnan, Co. Tyrone) in the Roman Catholic Chapel, Mackay, Queensland, Australia on 21st April 1874 (Qld M/C 1874/348).  Margaret died on 7th November 1885 in Reception House, Brisbane, Qld, leaving John with 6 children (Patrick John 17/02/1875;  James 22/10/1876;  Margaret 31/07/1878; my Grandfather Thomas 22/06/1880;  Eda 31/12/1882;  and the baby, Sarah 27/08/1885).  The 5 eldest children were sent to St Vincent's Orphanage on 22/11/1885 and I am now trying to find John's movements with little luck and his parents (Patrick Carroll and Margaret Kelly - who I think may have married in the Irish Roman Catholic Parish of Knockany and Patrickswell on 28 Feb 1843.  John seems to have disappeared from Brisbane quite poor as he had a few outstanding fines and I must get back to tracking/sluething that info.

I have been trying to trace John's ancestry but find the number of Carroll's amazingly huge and have not had much luck to date (in between work, retirement, renovations, grandchildren, elderly parents etc etc) and hope to get back to this again in the not too distant future.

I hope you don't mind if I use some of your information to check on just in case this is something to do with my John and can lead me a little further.

Many thanks and all best wishes from Oz,

Debbie McNeil (born. Schwartz of the Schwartz married to the Ryan's of Graystown, Tipperary line)

  • Hi, Debbie,

Good luck with the information. What you've written isn't familiar to me, but that doesn't mean there is no connection. Based on a baptismal record, I believe my Margaret's parents are John Carroll and Margaret Keane. John may have a brother Patrick. I'm thinking this due to the sponsor on the baptismal record. The church was located in Rockhill and Bruree, Limerick, Ireland.

    Hope that helps you out.
