BIRTH

Margaret Riordan (sounds like REAR done) was born about 1794 and probably in County Kerry, Ireland since her death record was in the Tralee Registration District and reported her estimated year of birth.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

She married Timothy Flaherty about 1812 in County Kerry, Ireland since their first child was born in 1813. It is likely that they were married in Slievenavadoge Townland. They had six children during their marriage. All of her children were born in Slievenavadoge Townland. The children were baptized in the Clogherbrien Civil Parish, Spa (Tralee) Catholic Parish, in County Kerry, Ireland. Ardfert and Aghadoe (Kerry) was the Diocese.

RELIGION

The baptismal records recorded the events in Roman Catholic parishes. The family probably attended Mass in the Town of Tralee, about three miles to the east. After Timothy's death, about 1845, Margaret may have attended Mass about six miles to the southwest at the Churchill Roman Catholic Church, St Mary's Star of the Sea, which was built in 1859. In Margaret's lifetime a six mile trip by horse or donkey and cart was completed within an hour.

PROPERTY

Margaret Riordan Flaherty had a land lease in Slievenavadoge of over 78 acres in 1848. It was noted that it was a "three lives lease." She may have designated her four sons as successors ("second lives"). Her sons, subsequently, may have designated their first (due to decreased resources) sons as successors ("third lives").

DEATH

Since the land lease was in Margaret Flaherty's name, and not in her husband's, it is likely that her husband, Timothy Flaherty, passed away about 1846. Margaret Riordan Flaherty died a Widow on April 20, 1874 according to her death record. She died in Slievenavadoge (Plover Hill in English) Townland, in the Clogherbrien Civil Parish, Spa (Tralee) Catholic Parish, in County Kerry, Ireland.

BURIAL

As of 2021, the location of the gravesite was uncertain. Margaret Riordan Flaherty may have been buried in Churchill Cemetery in Glebe Townland located very near Chapeltown Townland. Burial records before 1898 were unavailable for Churchill. Margaret and Timothy Flaherty may also have been buried in the Town of Tralee.
