Migrated to/Born in Australia

Mary Ann Fitzgerald was born in Ballingarry, Limerick.  She came to Australia as an "Irish Orphan" via the Tippoo Saib in 1850.   She was my 3 x great grandmother and I would love to know more about her.

  • Hi,

There are no baptismal records for Ballingarry for 1829-1949

However on the 12 June 1830 a William Fitzgerald married a Maria/Mary Sullivan in Ballingarry

Looks like that William died in 1880 aged 80, recorded as a farmer so unlikely to be your ancestor

    and on 28 Jan 1831 a Richard Fitzgerald married a Maria/Mary  H?????

You say she was classed as an orphan so presumably the parents died before 1850 when there were no records

Do you have any other information, mother's name?,  sibling names ?, fathers Christian name, occupation ?

  • Hi Lisa,

My apologies for the very late reply!

Mary Ann was born in Ballingarry, in the barony of Upper Connello (I think).  Her parents were Thomas Fitzgerald (1800-sometime before1850) and Mary Hogan.  Mary Hogan was born in Lissamota, date unknown.

Mary Ann went into a workhouse sometime during the Famine- I am yet to figure out which one- and she was picked to go to Australia under the Earl Grey Scheme.  There were 4000+ girls who went to Australia via this scheme and they were known as Irish Orphans. Not all the girls were orphans by the way, but they were known as such, I assume because they were living in workhouses.  Unfortunately that's all I know of her life in Ireland.  I know a little more about her life in Australia but I'd love to know more about her life in Ireland.

    Cheers,  Nikki
