  • Did Mary have a brother John or James, son of John/James Frawley and Mary Fitzgerald. John was born Limerick/Ardagh 1822-23. John came to Australia about 1854 and married Mary Connors.

    Many thanks

  • My 2nd Great Grandmother Mary Fitzgerald (1832-1915) was born in Co. Limerick, possibly near Kilbehenny.  Kilbehenny is located on the Co. Cork border and is within 2 kilometres of the Co. Tipperary border. The nearest major town is Mitchelstown.

My Mary came to Victoria, Australia, in the early 1850s, possibly 1852 or 1853.  When she arrived in Victoria (possibly alone?) she stayed with her father's sister (her blood aunt) Margaret/Bridget Cahill, nee Fitzgerald.  They must have lived in the Brighton area as there is a plaque honoring Patrick Cahill and others for establishing that church AND that was the church that my Mary married William Goodall in 1853.

Unfortunately, I do not know the names of Mary's siblings.  I got her father's name from the Marriage Certificate.  I would make sense that either before or after Mary one or more of her siblings made the same journey.  It was a welcome time to leave Ireland.

Have you looked at a copy of the Marriage Certificate for your John and Mary Connors and not relied on a transcript?  Have you researched the witnesses at the wedding?

Look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Hi Wendy, many thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

No I haven't got a proper MC for John and Mary but I will now get one. As you say, it was a very welcome time to leave Ireland and that was about the time my family also left. Quite a few of their elderly parents decided to follow them as well which would have been quite a descision to make.

I will get back to you when I have Joh and Mary's MC.

    Thanks again for contacting me

  • Hi Wendy,

I have looked at the MC for John and Mary Frawley and their witnesses and know that they were both cousins of John's.

They all lived in the Bendigo area, the two Frawley families coming out in the early 1850's. I have since been able to find a couple of other families who seem to have a connection the Mary Fitzgerald which I will keep exploring. Thanks for your response. I will keep your info' in mind as I do the research.

Many thanks for your interest. Helping each other makes this site so useful.

  • Margaret,

If you enjoy reading look for this book at your local library, "Can you Hear the Sea: my Grandmother's Story" by Brenda Niall, ISBN 9781925498790.  Although it mentions my Cahill connection in the book, it is still a lovely story of the Irish during those years in Victoria.

  • Thank you Wendy, Will do that. I do enjoy reading about our forebears. They certainly had a story to tell.

  • Good morning.   I too am looking for a Mary Fitzgerald   My Mary had three children in the same areas Limerick and Aherlow  in the years 1872-78    No records can be found for their births and they were put into an orphanage as the father passed   The names were changed as well as religion    Could this be your Mary too.

  • Hi Darcy,

I don't believe this is my Mary.  My Mary Goodall, nee Fitzgerald (1832-1915) married in 1853 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia.  She had 11 children between 1854 and 1874.

Margaret might want to weigh in on this question.

    Best regards.

  • Hi there, Wendy and Darcy,

I'm afraid I don't  know if your Mary is related as I don't have any records for her other than the MC of her son John. John was born around 1822 so she would have been born around 1800.

    I will keep searching.

    Regards

    Margaret
