  • I believe that my Great Grandfather, John Joseph Cairns (1841-1897) was born in Latnamard, Aghabog, Co. Monahan, and his father was probably Patrick Kearns, 1808-1847. Patrick is buried, along with his parents, Thomas and Ann Kearns, in the graveyard of St Mary's Church, Latnamard. The dedication on the grave was written by his brother, Michael Kearns of Drumhillah. There were a lot of McPhillips in the area when I was trying to find out more about the Carins/Kearns family and it seems possible that it was this same Michael Kearns that married Mary McPhillips (obviously not the same one as your relative but possibly connected), a farmer's daughter of 'full age' on 14th Feb 1884, in the presence of Patrick and Bridget McPhillips. I found the marriage extract for this on-line. The couple had about 7 children and are subsequently recorded in the 1911 Ireland census. My Great Grandfather's family moved to Belfast in the mid-1800's and his brother, Henry, later left a bequest in his will to "Annie McPhillips, my half cousin" which seemed to confirm the connection between the Kearns family and the McPhilliips in the Drumhillah and Latnamard area. .

  • I wonder if the Patrick & Bridget McPhillips who were present at the marriage are my great great grandparents! I have Mary marrying Thomas Keirans. 14th Feb 1844 Thomas Kierans - Drumhilla, Fathe- Michael. Mary Mcphillips Latnamard father - Thomas. I don't know how to attach the certificate on here. It is on Irishgenealogy.ie

  • Thanks Arusha - I do already have this certificate - although I believe the date is 14th Feb 1884? I had been wondering whether this Thomas Keirans was the son of my Great Great Grand Father's brother. However earlier records for this parish are few and far between. Please let me know if you find any other connection with the Keiran/Kearns families in Latnamard.

  • Sue, Have you taken a DNA test? I have a DNA link to another researcher that is a Kearns desendant (from Monaghan). She has documents indicating are families are related and we have other documents with baptismal connections, etc. My DNA kits are on GEDmatch.com, Ancestry.com, and MyHeritage.com. I'd be happy to share additional details if you are interested in collaborating.

  • Hello again Jack,

I just got my Ancestry DNA test results back and it says I have a distant connection (4th-5th cousin) shared DNA with a couple of family trees that do include a Mary McPhillips - the love2sew2001  and the Sowles Nicholson family trees, which both have her married to Charles Henry Swartz as well as a Michael McPhillips in the Nowell Family tree. However I'm not aware of any of my Cairns/Kearns direct ancestors that married a McPhillips so I'm not sure how this all ties in. I can't see any other familiar surnames in the trees that might otherwise explain the link. It does seem like there were quite a few McPhillips & Kearns in the Aghabog/Latnamard area and my great uncle left a bequest to "Annie McPhillips, my half cousin" as I mentioned above, who was probably also my greatgrandfather's half cousin - whatever that means! My (recent) ethnicity result was also heavily pointing to a County Monaghan/Louth connection.

Let me know what you think about all this.

    Regards,

    Sue
