  • Michael Cantwell emigrated to Indianapolis, Indiana about 1848.  The only clue as to why he went there was becasue there were others from Clonmel who also came.  Those would be the BRODEN Family.

Michael was very active in his Catholic parish, Saint Joseph's in Indianapolis.  He was a trustee of the parish and helped to establish the school as well as the parish church in the 1870's.

He was married at St. Mary's Clonmel in 1846 to Bridget MOORE, daughter of Michael Moore and Johanna Connell.  Johanna apparently emigrated to Indiana as well as she is found in the 1860 U.S. Census.

One of Michael's sons was Edward Cantwell.  Edward's great-grandaughter is US Senator Maria Cantwell from the State of Washington.  Another son was Thomas Edward Cantwell.  His grandson, Frank Widner was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.
