Michael Larkin  (1837-1867)

Born on the properties of Lusmagh's Cloghan Castle, Michael was the second child of MICHAEL LARKIN and MARY QUIRKE.

He was Baptised at St. Cronan's Church in 1837.

His father was a tailor by trade, and the family, after many generations, left the properties of Cloghan for Birr.

MICHAEL married SARAH DUNN at St. Brendan's, Birr, 11 July 1856.

They had FIVE children:

Patrick (1856-1893) Born at Birr and died in New York.

Bernard (1859-1865) Born at Birr and died in Birr or Manchester

Mary Ann (1860-1940) Born at Birr and died in New York

Margaret (1863-1916) Born at Birr and died in New York

Catherine (1866-1944) Born at Manchester and died in New York

Michael Larkin was one of the Manchester Martyrs, hanged at Salford Gaol, 23 November 1867.

  • Your Larkins were neighbours of my Keogh ancestors baptised in Lusmagh.

One of mine married one of yours somewhere down the  line.

  • Wonderful to see that my posting here has turned up information.

We do not have the Keogh surname in our Tree as of yet, Clara, but now I can do some research to find out which "branch" the Larkin and Keogh families belong.

  • Could you tell me Mary Larkin's husband's name?

The Larkin's were married to the Kelly's

    Thank you.

  • @momdotts:

If you mean Mary Anne, daughter of Michael and Sarah, she married James B. Thompson, in New York, March of 1890. Both are buried in a cemetery in Westchester, NY.

  • Unfortunately not my Mary.

My Mary Larkin was married to Patrick Kelly.

  • My great grandfather's (Michael Kelly) sister, Mary Anne Kelly, was married to John Larkin. They wed in Lusmagh on Feb 20 1881 and lived at Cloghan Castle. My G2 grandmother (Michael Kelly's mother) Ann Pain Kelly lived with them.  I think John Larkin may be Michael Larkin's nephew, but not sure. Michael Larkin's mother Mary is buried in John & Mary Kelly Larkin's grave plot in Kilmachunna Cemetery (she is id's at the bottom of the headstone).

  •  [sorry, but I could not see your name on the post of Thursday 22 July 2021, 11:03]

Yes, the John Larkin (1807-1896) you mention was the uncle of Michael Larkin, The Manchester Martyr. So, the John Larkin (1855-1938) who married Mary Anne Kelly would have been Michael's cousin.

So, that being the case - your Mary Anne Kelly was wife to John Larkin, who was my first cousin 4x removed.

And, yes, my 3rd great grandmother, Michael's mother, Mary Quirke Larkin, is buried in the plot with the Larkin/Kelly branch.

  • I believe my Patt Kelly married Mary Larkin on 4 Feb 1834.  Below is the link

    https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634795#page/231/mode/1up

    It was in Toomevara.

They had their first child "Rose" on 23 Mar 1835 in Lusmagh.

I would love to go back further, but do not know where I would find births before 1833.  In addition, I've been unable to find out any information about Mary Larkin other than the marriage.

Finally, for some reason, there are only three births for the entire year of 1852 in Lusmagh.  This is highly unlikely, but of course my g-g grandmother was born in that year according to all of the information I have found on her so far.  (Anna Kelly Bedell).

Thank you all!  Please stay safe & well everyone!

  • Thank you Donnacha for the information. The cemetery headstone listing Michael Larkin's mother was my only tie to him. As distant as the connection is, I'm proud to be in the lineage even if only by marriage.
