Patrick McCarthy 1810

Back to List

My g-g-gfather Patrick McCarthy (b~1810) married Julia Sullivan (b~1820-1825) around 1844 in Ireland.  They had three known children born there:  Bridget (b~1845), Daniel (b~1847) and Mary (b~1849).  Circumstantial evidence shows there may have been other children, but these are the ones that showed up in the 1860 census.  Apparently, they emigrated to the U.S. around 1854, and went directly to Terre Haute, Vigo County, USA.   Patrick had a brother, Daniel, b~1819 that appears to have gone to the same area before them, as his obit says he arrived in the area in 1850.  Patricks' son Daniel, at the time of one of his childrens birth, stated he was from Kenmare.   Findagrave for Daniel states he was born in Kenmare, but I don't know where they got their info.  My late brother, Daniel, and an uncle did considerable research 50 years ago, and they came up with Kenmare; but the documentation is lost.  My uncles' notes said Patrick had two sisters (no names).  One married a man named Shea  (Daniel ? see below), and the other married a man named Hennessy, and they emigrated around 1854 also.  I have found baptism records for the 3 children that show a townland of Dirreenathlauig.  (spelling?)   Daniel's baptism was witnessed by Felix and Lucy McCarthy (Patrick's parents??) and Bridget's was witnessed by Florence and Ellen Sullivan (Julia's parents ??).  Mary was witnessed by Lucy McCarthy and Daniel Shea.  Any of these names/dates match up with your family ?   I would love to be able to confirm the info I have so far, and hopefully discover other family members.
