Patrick's mother died when he was six days old. He lived with his Uncle William at Enniscoe House as staff members. They emigrated to the USA c. 1852. Patrick worked as a glass cutter in the Boston area. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army.
He served in the Wisconsin 1st Regiment until discharged for disability October 16, 1862. Returning to the glass trade in Chicago, he married Mary O'Toole (an emigrant from County Wexford) in 1868. They tried farming in Kansas but it was too hot.
In about 1872 Patrick, Mary, and their two sons traveled west to Olympia, Washington. He applied for a homestead and was granted 163 acres. Patrick and Mary had 8 children and lived the rest of their lives on the farm they established.
