Patrick's mother died six days after his birth. He lived with uncle William McNulty's family at Enniscoe House as staff members. They emigrated to the USA c. 1852. Patrick worked as a glass cutter in Boston. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army.
After Civil War battlefield service, he was discharged due to disability in 1862. Patrick returned to the glass trade in Chicago and married Mary O'Toole (emigrant from County Wexford) in 1868. They tried farm life in Kansas, but it was too hot.
In about 1872 Patrick, Mary, and two sons went west to Olympia, Washington. He was granted a homestead of 163 acres. They had eight children and lived on the farm they established. Son John: "He was a worthy and upright man, honest and fair."
