Back to List

Patrick Melody is the half-brother of my great(x2) grandfather. His is listed as a Blacksmith in US Census reports. He is listed as a Blacksmith apprentice in his obituary. His 1903 Obituary reads:

Patrick Melody died at the home of his son, Thos. Melody, on Brimmer Brook early yesterday morning in his ninety-ninth year. Death was due to old age. Mr. Melody having been hale and hearty up to within a year and only having been ill for the past two weeks. During the pleasant weather in March he drove down town with his son and visited the photographer and appeared at that thime to be good for many years to come. Patrick Melody is believed to have been the oldest man in Allegany county, and but few were permitted to live to such a ripe old age.

He was born Jan. 27, 1805 in county Galloway, Ireland. He was the son of Thomas Melody and Mary Grace, an Anglo-Saxon, who, however, was a native of Ireland, and he had two brothers and two sisters. One brother, Michael, came to America and died some five years ago in Wisconsin, at the age of seventy-six. Patrick served seven years as an apprentice for a blacksmith and worked at his trade for forty years; at first in Ireland and then at the age of thirty-three years came to America, living for awhile in New York, where he worked on the New York reservoir and later on the Erie railroad during its construction. He went to Chantaugua county in 1845 and cleared a farm, living there until the fall of 1858, when he came to Allegany county and worked at his trade.

In 1860 he bought land on Brimmer Brook which he cleared and where he has lived until his death.

He was twice married, his first wife being Bridget Larkin, who died in 1847, and to whom were born two sons and two daughters; one son, Thomas Melody, alone survives, living on the old homestead on Brimmer Brook. Mr. Melody was married the second time to Margaret Garrigan, and she died in 1881. Of this union two daughters, Mary and Jane, are dead, and four children survive, John and Lizzie of Little Washington, PA, Mrs. Catherine McMahon of Teldo, Ohio, and Mrs. Annie Hinkle of Lima, Ohio.

Thomas Melody, the son who has cared for his father so faithfully during his declining years, lives on the old farm and is a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the First New York Mounted Rifles. His wife died in February last and now again death enters the home and removes the aged father.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at the Immaculate Conception church and the remains will be taken to Scio for burial in the family lot.
