He was one of a family of twelve. His cousin James Murphy born to Patrick Murphy & Catherine O’Brien on 1st April 1891 at Waterview Turloughmore also emigrated.

Ellis Island record differs as it lists Patrick O'Brien, aged 22, son of Martin O'Brien, Turloughmore who sailed on S.S Baltic from Queenstown on 19th September 1913. Had $25 in his possession, fare paid by his cousin James Murphy, 225 Black Street, Indianapolis. (The Martin O’Brien mentioned may have been his brother rather than parent.)

Patrick J O’Brien enlisted under Draft for WW1 5th June 1917, “80th Jackson Irish”, living at 439W New York Street, Indianapolis. At this time he was employed by Michigan Railway Co. as a Railroad Conductor. James Murphy enlisted on same date, living at 417W New York Street, Indianapolis, listed as Butcher by profession.

James Murphy called up to active service 26th April 1918, Private 4th Company, 1st BN, 159th. He was discharged/mustered out on 30th Dec. 1918 (Dementia). Listed his relative as John B Qualter, 271 Holmes Ave., Indianapolis
