Richard Thompson was born in County Down somewhere between 1833 & 1836. First recordings of him were on his marriage certificate dated 28 May 1860 in Egremont, Cumberland to Mary Ann Jenkinson, both aged 27. His father was Robert, a labourer.  On the census' from 1861 to 1901 his birth year varies and is recorded as 1833, 1835 and 1836.  The headstone of his grave states he was 67 when he died on 31 March 1904 making it possible he was born either in 1836 or 1837.

He was an iron ore miner during his life in England and remained in the area until his death in 1904.  He  had four children, Thomas 1861 - 1913, Robert 1864 - ?, Eleanor 1868 - 1954 and Richard 1871 - ?  Family story says he actually came from Newry/Dundalk but there is no proof of this.
