Rodger was born in Townland of Tievegarriff in Ballynakill Parish . He was the son of John Coyne and Ellen "Nellie" Welch. He was brother to Taghd "Tady" , Sarah and Patrick Coyne. He married Ann Gannon (whose brother Philip married Rodger's sister Sarah) and had a daughter Bridget in about 1851 before they left Ireland to join family in Marcellus NY where they had 6 more children. Rodger and Ann are buried in Sy. Francis Xavier cemetery in Marcellus with their sons, Thomas, James and Stephen (twins)
