Back to List

Sarah Hickey was born in 1828 to 1832 in Nenagh, Tipperary and worked as a kitchen maid before departing Ireland 1848 or 1849 as an "Irish famine orphan" as part of the Earl Grey Scheme for resettlement in Australia. She was Roman Catholic.

She sailed from Ireland on the Pemberton, arriving in Melbourne, Australia on May 26, 1849. She was married twice in Australia. She first married James Hamilton and then later, in 1864, she married William Godbold in Victoria. She died of rheumatic fever on the Victorian goldfields at Smythesdale, Victoria in about 1877.

Her parents might have been John Bennett (or John Hickey) and Mary Ann Gleeson although this has not been verified. At several stages in records her surname has been given as Bennett or A'Beckett.

Our family would love to discover some more information on what her situation might have been in Nenagh before leaving for Australia, or indeed any other information surrounding her life.
