Migrated to/Born in USA

Thomas Flanagan, son of Patrick Flanagan and Ellen Farrell, was born Roman Catholic in Ireland, in about 1843 (possibly November, based on the 1900 US census).

He married Mary Ann Teresa Woods at St. Mary's in Athlone, Ireland on 13 Aug 1865. Both fathers were "shop keepers," Thomas a "shop man," Mary Ann a "shop girl." The witnesses were J. Byrne (not sure of the initial) and Alice Logan.

They had Alicia Anne "Alice" Flanagan 23 Jul 1867. She was baptized as "Eliza Anna" at St. Mary's, Athlone, 24 Jul 1867. Thomas' occupation is Grocer, "Church" which I assume is Church Road. The sponsors were James Donohoe (who may be a relative of Mary Ann's mother) and Eliza Logan (who may be the same as the Alice Logan on the marriage record)

Thomas left Ireland about 1871 and went to New York City, New York, United States. It appears from census records that his wife and child followed about a year later. I haven't found either passenger lists or naturalization documents.

Thomas and Mary Ann had five more children, all born in New York City:

  • James Patrick (b.18 Feb 1874, possibly d.28 Jun 1968)

  • Edward John (b.14 Nov 1876, d.abt. 20 Sep 1956)

  • Mary Ann (b.2 Mar 1878, d.21 Jul 1878)

  • Thomas (b.13 Jun 1879, d.27 May 1880)

  • Thomas Francis (b.5 Dec 1882, d.5 Mar 1946)

Thomas died 19 Mar 1926 in New York City, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
