My great great grandfather was Thomas Markey.
Thomas Markey was born on the 19th of November 1874 at Parsonstown a Demesne, Meath to parents Peter Markey and Anne Mooney.
Parsonstown Demesne is a small estate located in the district of Killary in North County Meath. The nearest Registrar District is Ardee. The church he attended was Heronstown Roman Catholic Church. Thomas grew up ok the Demesne with about 5 houses and 1 Large House. In the 1901 Census, there was a Protestant Family named the Donovan’s who lived in the large house of the Demesne.
Margaret Murphy was a Parlour Maid/ Domestic Servant in the house and was therefore living next door to Thomas Markey. They fell in love and were married on the 28th of August 1902 at Heronstown Church.
Margaret Murphy was 10 years older than him. This was my grandfather’s grandmother. My grandad said that she used to lie about her age, which I found through research to be true. She claimed on both censuses she was born 1872 when in actual fact was born 1864! It was only when she was buried that it says the right year. She was from Baldoyle, Dublin. Hence, Margaret and Thomas moved to Dublin the year they got married.
They had 3 children Peter Francis Markey (born 24/11/1903), John Robert Markey (born 17 Jun 1905), Norah Maria Markey ( born 5/4/1907).
By 1908, they moved to 6 New Wapping Street, Dublin. Thomas Markey worked as a General Labourer. According to older family members, Thomas was a very nice man/gentleman.
Unfortunately my grandfather never got the opportunity to meet his grandfather as he died 5 years before he was born in 1933.
I believe though Thomas would return to Meath quite often as even my grandfather was brought to Lobinstown as a child and remembered the kind cousins in Parsonstown and Heronstown.
Thomas died of an acute Penumonia and Cardiac Failure on the second of January 1933.
He was buried in the Markey plot in Glasnevin Cemetery.
