Migrated to/Born elsewhere

Thomas Reddan married Ellen Crimins in the parish of Shanagolden, Diocese of Limerick, on 1 March 1840

Their daughter Bridget was probably born in 1840. (Victoria, Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages, Marriage Certificate of John Clancy and Bridget Reddan, 482/1862 and Death Certificate of Bridget Clancy 11645/1882).

Their son Thomas was baptised on 29 August 1844.

I have been told by a descendant that Bridget Reddan had a sister, Mary who married John Egan in South Melbourne. I have no supporting documents.

On 2 June 1915 at Fawkner Memorial Park, a Thomas Reddan was buried in the same grave as Michael Clancy, son of Bridget Reddan

Perhaps the whole family emigrated to Australia, or perhaps, only the children did.

  • Mary Redden married John Egan in 1869, and died in 1880 (Vic rego number 11338/1880) which confirms parents names and her and birthplace.

  • A Thomas Reddan died in 1913, not 1915, at Ascot Vale, same location as Michael Clancy, parents names not recorded (Unknown), but his age was given as 68 yrs (Vic rego number 7796/1913), consitent with birth date of 1844

  • Hi. I'm the Ireland Reaching Out Parish Liaison for Shanagolden Parish. I have several local Shanagolden History books that I have checked for the Reddan family.

In Gerard Curtin's book, Every Field Had A Name, there is reference to James Reddan (Pg. 57.) James was killed at the fair in Stonehall which was held in Kilcornan. James was a schoolteacher and he was killed 1832 in intense faction fights between three Kennedy brothers and the Downes family and the military..

According to James Curtin in West Limerick: Crime, Popular Protest and Society 1820-1845, James Reddan was teaching in Ballycannon, Askeaton, and seemed to be of an older age as he was the highest paid teacher, suggesting a client base built up over a long period of time. This book also claims that James Reddan was one of the LEADERS of the Kennedy faction (indicating a familial link) and he was shot dead by the military.

Unfortunately, this is the only info in my books re the Reddan family. I hope it helps you to broaden your search area for them.

  • Hi Patti

Thank you for your efforts in trying to trace my ancestors. The only other Reddan names I have are Michael and Maria Reddan and John Reddan but noJames Reddan.

Given that three Reddan siblings migrated to Australia I'm beginning to suspect that their parents did also or that the parents had died before their children migrated.

Is there any possibility of locating the Catholic church where Thomas Reddan and Ellen Crimins (Crimmons) were married and the children baptised?

Are there any Crimins (Crimmons) still in the area?

Was Shanagolden greatly affected by the famine of the 1840s?

  • Shanagolden appears to have lost about 26% of their population during famine in the 1840's. Some areas were hit harder than others.

There  is a notation in Every Field Had A Name on Pg. 36 that The Widow Crimen, Ballyegny, Rathronan had her cattle seized in November 1849 for rent due the landlord, Lord Clare. The cattle were taken to the police station in Shanagolden.

Also in West Limerick Families Abroad by Kate Press and Val Thompson, on Pg. 15 there is a notation about John Allen of Ballinvirick on his way home with James Crimmins from the Croagh Fair on 1 Mar 1835 when the went past a riot that resolved as they arrived. John was given a 7 year sentence for assault causing bodily harm to John and Denis Hogan. John arrived in Sydney, Australia on the Calcutta on 4 Aug 1837. He rec'd hisTicket of Leave for the Murray District in 1841 and his Certificate of Freedom in 1854.

Also in West Limerick Families Abroad on Pg. 180 there is a marriage between Denis Quilty b 1832 and Mary Crimmins b 1837, daughter of John Crimmons and Mary Barrett. Denis and Mary emigrated separately to Victoria, with both of them arriving in 1858. Mary died 18 Feb 1931 in Northcote, Victoria, Australia. Denis died 2 Sep 1917 in Victoria. Denis and Mary were married in Melbourne 25 apr 1859. They had 13 kids.

There is something called Matheson's Surname Report written in 1894. It lists all locations in Ireland that had at least 6 families with the same surname living in it. There were 25 cases of Cremin found. All 25 were found in Munster; 11 in Cork and 11 in Kerry. (I know 11 + 11 = 22, but that is what the rcd says!)

As far as Reddan goes, The Matheson's Report shows there were 15 listed; 6 in Leinster, 8 in Munster, and 1 in Connaught.

I thought I read somewhere the Find My Past had an index of the Catholic Church records. They are the only group I know of that might have an index. Otherwise you will have to go through the parishes one by one to try and find a marriage. The Catholic Church records are at: https://registers.nli.ie/ I just checked Find My Past and they DO have an index. You will have to create an account, but they will let you look at results for FREE, but they don't give much info - name of child, place of birth and date. I found about 18 Crimens and Reddans in Shanagolden. You will have to PAY to get the results, or go into the parish rcds and hunt for them yourself. At least you'd have DATES.

You may be able to use some of the info about the Cremin's to check church rcds for the townlands they were from. It might give you some direction to look in.

There are also at least 6 Reddans and Cremins in the Co Limerick phone book at: https://www.eirphonebook.ie/

    Good luck!
