William Leslie was my Great x4 Grandfather.

His regimental papers say that he was born in Nenagh in about 1764. He joined the 5th Regiment of foot on 25 Jun 1782. I know that the 5th regiment were in Ireland from June 1763 to 1774 when they went to the USA. They returned to Ireland in January 1781 and remained there for the next couple of years. I know Nenagh had a military barrack, which was built in 1832, I am not sure if there was an army presence before this time.

I'm interested to find out if William was native to Nenagh and joined up while the regimnet were based in Ireland or if he was an army child who just happened to be born in Ireland.

When he left the army in 1814 aged 50, he settled in Warrington, England.

He died in 1835 and was buried in a Church of England graveyard so I assume this was his religion.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you

Janice
