Hello,

I am trying to find out anything I can on the Dooley family, My Great grandparents were Joseph Dooley and Johanna Byrne.  I do not know either of their parents.   Information as far as I know is that they had 12 children together, 3 girls and 9 boys. Joseph was born in 1846, Deryduff, County Laois, Ireland and Johanna was born 1865 kilkenny, Ireland.   The 1901 census shows my grandmother, their daughter,  being age 7, she was born 12/4/1893 in Queens county on 3/31/1901 she was listed as living in house #5 Derryduff, Coolrain, Queens Co., Ireland.  I see my grandmother Bridget Dooley  as giving birth to Elizabeth  on April 2, 1911 in Iristown, Mountmellick Urban, Queens Co.   Her mother Bridget, my grandmother left Ireland June 27, 1912 from Queenstown, Ireland and landed in Philadelphia, USA the ship was Haverford.  Elizabeth was left ireland.   I know nothing more about her until she married a Mark Whelan in March 1933 in Prescot, Lancashire.  They seemed to have 5 children and I can find a name Patricia Whelan  born 1935 died 1939. and another daughter Maureen Medina Whelan and then it seems 3 more children.  My mother was Elizabeth's sister and I am certain she never knew of her believing she was an only child.  She would have loved having a sister.

What I am trying to find out about is my grandmother's  Bridget Margaret Dooley family (siblings and their families), anything at all on my great grandparents.   Most definetly I want to find out all I can of Elizabeth Dooley Whelan.   The one thing I did find is that Elizabeth's  father and mother in law were Tom Whelan 1871-1947 and Sarah Culkin 1867-1903.  But I would love to find family from any of them that are still living and could be contacted and also be able to add to my family tree.

I hope I made this as clea as possible.   I am so excited about finding a sister of my mothers that none of us knew even existed.   I would really love to know more about her family.   I am hoping you can help me or direct me to somewhere that I could possibly get more help as I am not very adept using computers so I need direction.   I thank you in advance for whatever help you can give.   Sincerely, Mare Doeberl

  • Hi Frank,

I am sending this again simply because I am not certain if I made a mistake on my last reply.  I also tried to answer via the e-mail you gave me and it would not go through.   I hope I am getting through to you as I would love to correspond and find out as much about my Aunt Elizabeth Dooley.    Thanks, I hope to hear from you soon.   Marie Plancon

  • I don't know anything about your aunt but there were five children. I met one of them Frank Whelan and his wife. I lost contact with the family but I have reestablished contact with them. Send me your email and I will send you want I have. Mark Whelan had also a difficult childhood.
    Will touch base later.

  • Hi Frank,

Thank you for your reply.   My e-mail address is maggiedooley39@gmai.com.   I would be happy to hear from whomever wants to share as I want to know as much about my Aunt Elizabeth and her family as possible and want them to know us.  I know it must be difficult as the more I am learning the more I understand how difficult it was growing up then in Ireland or England.   Please know that I am not prying but trying to understand.   I know my Grandmother, Bridget Dooley, one way and what is known of her there is probably much different.

I am almost afraid to ask certain questions as I am not certain what I am asking such as I was reading about workhouses which had to do with my grandmother  Bridget and her daughter Elizabeth.    I have no idea of what a workhouse was or the conditions in which a person had to live.  So you see I feel as if I am walking on egg shells.  I just hope you feel comfortable in telling me anything that you know because as I have said I want to understand.  Thanking you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you.   Marie
