I am researching the Hogan family who lived in Clara, parents Martin Hogan and Ann Grady. Martin and Ann probably married in the mid 1850's. Children that I can attach to them so far (although I can't find any baptism records yet) are James, John, Mary (all came out to Australia in the 1880's and settled in Brisbane) and Martin and Bridget. There could also be more children that I haven't found yet.
Martin and Bridget remained in Clara, married and had children. Martin married Lizzie Grogan and I can find 4 children born to them. Bridget married Michael O'Connor.
We had hoped to visit Ireland this year, but of course everyone knows that isn't going to happen, so I was wondering if there is anyone here who knows any thing of this family, or could point me in the best direction to find more info.
Many thanks, Jean

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I've been working on finding your family with no success. The Clara RC baptismal records start in 1845 and are available on the subscription site Roots Ireland but I did not find any records for your family. The only record i could locate is the marriage record for young Martin in 1897 to Elizabeth Grogan.
I did find a Martin Hogan/Mary Clements couple (not in Clara) that had a number of children including a Martin and Bridget.
Let me know if you have any other info.

Hi Roger
Thank you so much for your reply to my message. I have found several records on the irishgenealogy.ie site, but interestingly I cannot find that marriage record you refer to. I had found then on the 1901 & 1911 census but have not been able to find their marriage. Could you tell me where you found it? I have since found quite a few burial records on Ancestry and it seems that most of the family are buried in the Clara Monastery Cemetery.
I also found a very sad story yesterday, Martin & Lizzie's daughter Mary Kate Hogan married John Kelly in 1933. They apparently had 2 children, (1 I have found named Sonny), before John was tragically killed in a work accident at Goodbody's in Clara on 17th August 1938. Sonny signed the burial register for his aunt Margaret in 1982, and his mother in 1987. So, it is almost possible that there could be some descendants still living in Clara or surrounds today.
Thanks again for your help Roger

Thanks Roger. I should have read your message twice before acting. I subscribed to RootsIreland for a month thinking I would get a certificate but now realise it's only a transcription. but it's good to have a date.

Hi Jean,
I'm from Clara, and think I may know the Sonny Kelly that you are referring to - I will carry out a few checks here locally and get back to you. I also live about 2 miles from the Monastery Cemetery and can take photos of the family graves (once i locate them) for you to add to your family tree.
You can reach the local heritage group directly on Facebook "Clara Heritage Group" of which I am an admin and i'm sure there are many locals who will have more information that you required.
you can also email me on claraheritagegroup@gmail.com

Do you mind me asking if you have done your DNA, that might also help with finding relatives in Clara. If you have there is an Offaly DNA group on Facebook.
