I am seeking information about a Horan family from Cloghan Co. Offaly.
Bernard Horan was born about 1838 at Cloghan to parents Bernard Horan and Mary Goodbody. Bernard Snr was a bootmaker
Bernard Horan had two sisters Ann born 1834 and Susan born 1835. Both sisters immigrated to Australia in 1853 and Bernard Jnr immigrated to Australia in 1856. I am having difficulty finding any information on Bernard Snr and Mary and if there was any other siblings.
Is there any Horan family still in Cloghan

Hi Vicki . . .
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . .
The name HORAN caught my attention on the Message Board . . . understandably . . .
as I was born Horan from Co.Offaly ( a.k.a Kings County - back then )
The name is very prevelant is the Town of Birr, Co.Offaly . . . which is close enough to Cloghan.
As you possibly aware . . . records that far back . . are few and far between . . . so . .
I searched back then . . . Bernard / Mary circa . . . born 1815 +/- 10 yrs. . . Nothing
I searched . . Bernard . . . born 1838 . . . Nothing . . .

Ann Horan . . . b.1834 . . . one only record shows up . . .note different Mother . . .
Name:Anne HoranDate of Birth:--1835
Date of Baptism:
Address:
Parish/District: Clonmacnoise Gender:
County Co. OffalyDenomination:
Father: Bernard Horan Mother: Honor Shea . . . .

Susan . . . b.1835 . . . .nothing

So . . . families . . . especially those who are Farming . . . can be in the same piece of Land for well over a Century . . . and with that in mind . . . I had a look at a full Census of 1901 in Ireland . .
looking for a common Christian name . . BERNARD . . . in the area of Cloghan > Co.Offaly

This Census notation . . . is the closest . . I can find . . . close to where the search begins . . .

A surviving " Land Tax " roll from 1826 + . . no Bernard Horan showing . . .
____________________________________________________
A Tax roll . . for . . 1846 ++ . . too many Horan's to seperate families . . . .

Not sure . . that any of the above. . . is of any help to you . . .
The Clan . . HORAN . . is quite frequent in the South Offaly area . . but records are sparse
Best of good wishes with your continued search . . .
Cheers . . . Eamonn.

Hello Eamon
I have done some more research and found that Bernard Jnr's father may have been John Bernard. I have also found a marriage of one of Bernards sisters in Australia so that is another mystery solved.
