My ancestor John Loughman died on 16 February 1883 in Athy.
I know the date he died from a family telegram and I found his death certificate on the Irish Genealogy site and it says he was born in 1820. His death was reported by his daughter, Bridget, who was known in the family as Lizzie. We also know of two other children - Edward ( Ned), born 1857 ish and Mary, 1862 ish. These three all moved to Manchester. On a census form Lizzie was put as having been born in Nurney in 1867. I cannot find any birth registrations for these three. I expect there may have been other siblings too.
John was a widower when he died and I think his wife may have been called Margaret, but I'm not sure about that. Christopher seems to be an important name in the family.
I'm struggling to find any other information about John or his wife and the family though, so a steer or some help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you!
Helen

Helen:
Can you clarify if the Loughman family was RC or Church of Ireland?
I'm not finding any records on the subscription site Roots Ireland for Loughman children with father John and mother Margaret. I've been looking in both Co. Laois and Co. Kildare. Athy RC records are in Co. Kildare and the town of Nurney is also in Kildare.
I do see a ChristopherLoughman married to an Anne Sinclair with baptismal records for six children.

Hi Roger, they were RC.
The Christopher Loughman you refer to is actually my great great grandfather's brother on the other side of the family. We have two Loughman branches, both from Athy. I have no idea how they were related but I think that they knew each other, as my great great grandfather, Edward ( Christopher's brother), and his wife appear to have been the witnesses at the wedding of John Loughman's son Ned in Manchester.
It's so intriguingkind regards

Catherine born August 5 1863 living in Ardree Athy
Christopher born December 12 1865 living in Ardree Athy
Sarah born June 3 1868 living in Ardree Athy

Roger, thank you for this.
I shall study the details. I hadn't found any of these baptisms, but I had seen a marriage record for John Loughman and Bridget Gray. On the basis that there was a daughter Bridget, and son, Ned, named his eldest daughter Bridget, I think this is a real possibility.from your information, John and Bridget's oldest daughter appears to have been called Margaret and I've seen a death record for her, saying that she died in Athy in 1872, aged 21.
l've looked on 'find my past'. Do you mind me asking where you found these details? Do you think there's a better choice for researching 19th century Kildare records?
best wishes, HelenHelen MW

Helen:
I use Roots Ireland (subscription) as my first choice for 19th century baptismal records. I use FindMyPast for those areas (not many) in Ireland not covered by Roots Ireland. I find searching on FindMyPast to be difficult.

Roger,
having had a chance to research what you found, I think you are right and this is my great great grandfather, John and his family. The one child missing is Ned (1852ish) so I shall continue to look for him. It's possible of course that he was actually christened John and just called Ned.
Thank you so much for helping me.
i found John and Bridget's marriage certificate, but unfortunately it doesn't tell me their fathers' names, so I haven't gone back any further yet or got any nearer to solving the question of if/how this John may be related to Thomas Loughman who married Elizabeth Osborne in Athy on 18 April 1831.
kind regards
Helen
