My great, great, great grandmother was Ann WHEELER (born SMITH aka MALONE aka Mahony and came out on the Earl Grey scheme. The ship - INCONSTANT commanded by Captain Patrick Culliton, sailed from Plymouth for Adelaide in South Australia. On board were 209 Irish female migrants who sailed on the Inconstant from Plymouth to Adelaide are available from shipping records of the times. These young Irish orphan girls from Newcastle 18, Mullingar 40, Tullamore 18, Mountmellick 22, Parsontown 30, Limerick 24, Tipperary 22, North Dublin 12 (Total 186), left Ireland as part of Earl Grey's PAUPER IMMIGRATION SCHEME.

Ann was born Tullamore, Kings County,(County Offaly) Ireland Circa 1832.

The INCONSTANT reached Adelaide on June 7th, 1849.

From what I can see Ann came out as Ann Smith (her mothers maiden name). Ann spent 5 years South Australia where she met and married Joshua John WHEELER - Aged 20 -  Kooringa, The Murray, Burra Burra, South Australia    - May 24 1851 and spent 59 years Victoria.

Ann and John had 6 children.

Her mothers name was Eliza Malone (born SMITH) & unknown fathers name.

Ann was Aged about 21 came to South Australia. Fable has it, with her sister, but cannot find evidence of sister.

Ann died  Gwynne street, Richmond, Victoria, Australia Apr 7 1909

If anyone can build on this as this is all I have would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

So I am seeking information on parents?? Ann – herself??

Thank you

Michelle

  • The online Catholic parish records which are available for Tullamore (also called Tullamore and Durrow) in County Offaly go back to 1809 (with some gaps), so you may be able to find Ann's baptism there.  You can find those records at this link:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0933

If you locate a baptismal record, it may indicate the name of the townland where the family lived.  If you get that info, you can get more info about the townlands in the parish at the following sites.  I know from past research (I have ancestors from the neighboring parish of Philipstown/Daingean, and possibly also from Tullamore itself, based on some DNA matches) that the civil and church parish boundaries in Offaly have changed over time, as have their names, so lists of the townlands in the parish can be confusing or incomplete.  The following pages list most (but possibly not all) of the townlands in the parish, as divided among two electoral districts (Tullamore Urban and Tulamore Rural), and a civil parish called Durrow, all of which are located within the Catholic parish boundaries for Tullamore and Durrow:

    Tullamore Urban:  https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/tullamore-urban/

    Tullamore Rural:  https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/tullamore-rural/

    Durrow:  https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/durrow2/

If you come up with a townland name which is not on any of those lists, then try this site which lists all of the townlands in Offaly:  https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/

  • Hi Kevin, I did locate the baptism record. Thank you very much.  What I would like to know as it states no townland and is just Tullamore, do you think it suggests that she actually came from Tullamore itself?? Is there anyway to build on this to find out?? Thank you

  • You should look at the other baptisms on the same page or nearby pages and see whether various townland names are given in the same column where you found Tullamore mentioned in your record.  If so, then it probably is a reference to the townland of Tullamore.  There is a specific townland by that name in the parish (shown in one of the lists I gave you, though I forget which one), which I assume is in, or part of, the town of Tullamore itself (which may have grown larger and encompassed what may have originally been a more rural townland, and some other nearby townlands).

Could you post a snip of the cert and we could have a look.

Also you should contact Offalyhistory.com - Historical society in Tullamore.  I think they might have done work on the Earl Grey girls.

  • Hi Geraldine

Firstly I do appologise as I completely missed your earlier reply ( I do not know how - Again many appologies)

Definitely Ann comes from Tullamore and yes I had contacted the offaly society but they advised for me to come in & unfortunately I am in Australia & just returned last october (But next time)

I certainly know who Perry Mcintyre is they have the Irish orphan website for australia BUT I had to send them everything I have to update their records as they had only her name

I have now traced Ann completely through and have written 2 pieces up BUT I still wanted to know if she was Parsontown OR Tullamore workhouse

I am inclined to say Tullamore as I found nothing in the Parsontown records for her & I can't find anything on line in regards to records for Tullamore

So I am stuck unfortunately till I actually see these records

Thank you so much for your assistance

    Regards Michelle
