  • Hello Roro

I posted the enquiry about Mary Kate Delaney who was my grandmother, birth registered on 10 March 1890, parents John Delaney and Bridget Shortall.  John and Bridget were married on 8 August 1889 and John was a blacksmith in Rathdowney, County Laois. John was born in 1863 (?) and died in 1926.  I think that Bridget was born on 3.3.1862 and her parents were Thomas Shortall and Mary Tobin. John and Bridget had 9 or 10 chidren of which Mary Kate was the eldest.  The others were Margaret, Bridget, Anne, Patrick, Julia, Ellen, John, Agnes and possibly one called Thomas. Two of the children - Agnes and Ellen - were sent to St Dominics Industrial School Waterford  on 18 November, 1909 where Agnes died on 21.6.1910 aged 9.  John was also sent to another industrial school in Ireland.  What I am trying to find out is what happened to the mother Bridget. She was living with John and 9 children at 5 Templequain, Kyle south, Queens County on the 1901 census but only John (father) and his son John are shown on the 1911 census for that address.  I know that Bridget and some of the younger children were subjected to domestic violence hence 3 of the children being sent away to the industrial schools but cannot find any trace of what happened to Bridget, no death record.  If you have, or would like to see any of the information I have found out about the famly please let me know.  Hoping to visit the area in Ireland some time this year, I suspect that Bridget may have ended up in the workhouse in Kilkenny.

  • Hi Pat,

Yes, this is the same Delaney's.  My Husbands family still live where the blacksmith forge was in Templequain.  I've hit the same roadblock with Bridget, no idea where she ended up.

(John is still listed as married on his death cert, so I hope that means she died after 1926.

I have a tree on Ancesty - McGroryDelaney, username Roisinmc1, search for John Delaney 1863-1926 and you can see what I have so far.   I try to add any birth, death and marriage records I find.

I was told the same, that John (married to bridget shortall) had issues with alcohol and domestic violence.   I was told that most of the girls moved to England but I'm hoping to get more information soon.  I'm going to reach out the oldest family member who, hopefully, will be able to share some more knowledge.

    Mary Kate 10 Mar1890

Margaret 13 Apr 1891 married John Smeaton (Rathdowney)  This marriage did not last and she moved to England, here she met William Strumer from Australia and emmigrated there.

Bridget 1892 - cannot find birth cert to confirm dates.

    Anne 20 Apr 1893

Patrick 20 Nov 1894 - 1970.  Married Margaret Neill.  Stayed in Templequain, Rathdowney.  Burried in Rathdowney cemetry.

    Julia 10 Jun 1895

Ellen 4 Aug 1897 - St Dominics, census 1911 but unknown after.

John Sep 1899 - Did not marry but spent time at St Fintan's, Portlaois, a mental health instituation.  He is burried with Patrick and his wife in Rathdowney.

Agnes 1901(abt) - I can't find a birth cert for her but did add her death as you provided above.

  • Hello again, thanks for the info its especially exciting that your husband has family still living in the old forge!  I am not a subscriber to Ancenstry have found all the information so far by using the free Irish sites which are very good and the Mormon site Family Search. Also had help from a contact in Ireland who has sent me many cuttings from local papers regarding John Delaney and his various appearances before the local courts.

My apologies if the info below is duplicated on your family tree. This is what I have:

Mary Kate - birth cert says 10.3.1890 but death cert shows 29.12.1899. But 1901 census shows her age as 11yrs 3 months which takes us back to Dec 1899. I understand that these anomolies are not unusual at this time. Kate married Harry Craven on 20.12.1914 in Donnybrook, Dublin and then moved to Leeds in England. They had 6 children of which my father was the second. The two youngest (twins) are still alive  now aged 93. She died in Leeds 8.8.1977.

Margaret, Bridget, Anne - same info as you have, no death info.

Patrick - same birth and death as you. He married Ellen Carey 10.4.1929 but she died in Aug 1929. He  Margaret Neil 17.9.1930 and they had 9 children. Margaret died 25.9.1988.

Julia - born 10.7.1895, married Thomas Brady 1.8.1928

Ellen, Agnes - same info as you.

John - same birth date, died 22.7.1981

Hope this of help. Keep searching! Will foreward any more info that I find.

    Pat
