Hello,

My great grandfather, Thomas Halligan b. 1822, Kings County, joined the RIC in 1842. Those records show his birth year and County of origin. However, I have been unable to locate his birth record or the names of his parents. The official who recommended him to the RIC was from Geashill. I am wondering which RC parish the family might have attended if they lived In or near Geashill.  Also, any hints as to finding his birth record. I have searched all avenues, including rootsireland with no luck.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish would have been Killeigh. Baptismal records for that parish start in April 1844. So if Thomas was born in 1842 a baptismal record would not be available. Civil registration of births started in 1864. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland from 1837-1847 for all of Co. Offaly and there were no Thomas Halligan baptismal records.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi, Would you know if there was a local newspaper between the years 1822-1845? In the area of Geashill or, more generally, Kings?

I sent an e-mail to someone local in Offaly to ask your question but I think the answer to your question will be no.

I finally hooked-up with my associate in Co. Offaly. The answer is what I told you earlier-- no papers available. The Offaly Independent is online but only starting 1920. All the best with your research!
