I'm trying to find where and when my husband's 4th-great grandfather was born, and who his parents were.

James O'Carroll/Carroll  was born about 1757-1765 in Armagh County, possibly Armagh parish, but not sure.  Tradition handed down by his son, Patrick, says that James had property in Tyrone but was banished from Ireland and his property confiscated for reasons unknown.  James immigrated to Canada and settled in St. Johns, Newfoundland where he worked in the shipping industry as a sea captain.  According to family accounts, an English nobleman paid James to marry Margaret Pottle, who had given birth to the nobleman’s child, Terrence, out of wedlock.  On April 25, 1789, James and Margaret were blessed with the birth of their only child, Patrick O’Carroll at St. Johns, Newfoundland.  When Patrick was still a child, his father died - about 1792.  Margaret remarried Patrick Murphy and came to New Brunswick, Canada in 1806.

Thank you!
