Sarah McMurray b: 1845 Markethill, Armagh, Northern Ireland (great grandmother)

John McMurray 1804 - 1871 d: Armagh, Northern Ireland (g g grandfather)

Margaret Jennings 1810 - 1904 d: Castlebar, Ireland (g g grandmother)

Sarah is my great grandmother. Sarah was born to John and Margaret McMurray. Sarah and James McMurray (could be brother) arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 26 July 1864. I have no further details regarding James, however Sarah married, raised a family and died in Australia. Any Irish research details of the family would be most appreciated.

John McMurray?s death was registered in Armagh city 1871 Volume 11, page 43. You can order a photocopy of that cert from GRO Roscommon for ?4. Put the place, year, volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). http://www.groireland.ie/

The death cert should give you John?s townland which may help trace the family. The births were all before the start of statutory birth registration so you are going to have to rely on church records to find their baptisms. Do you know what denomination they were?

  • Thank you, I will apply for a copy of death certificate shortly. Unfortunately I do not know the denomination. Sarah married John Nicholas Curwood and raised their family as Catholic, however the denomination may have relected the husband's family.

  • Looking at the 1901 census for Co. Armagh, there were 205 people named McMurray. The vast majority (136) were Church of Ireland, with 29 Presbyterians, 3 RC (just one family) and a sprinkling of Methodists etc. So in the absence of any other information I would start with Church of Ireland records.

Once you have the  townland from the death certificate, you can check which parish it is in using this site:

    http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/

You can then see what church records exist for the parish (all denominations) using this site:

  • Hi.

You don't know me, but Sarah and John McMurray are also a part of my family tree as well as Margaret Jennings, I am trying to trace the rest of this family, so as to finish these two parts of my tree.

Family 1 Sarah and John McMurray.

Family 2 Margaret Jennings, I'm not sure wether they lived in Ireland, Scotland or England and then emigrated to Americia and finally here to Australia.

Any help in this area  would be greatly apprieciated.

    Your's Sincerely.
