Can anyone shed any light on the Irish roots of my Catholic ancestor John Murphy b.1820, who was a carpenter from Athy? He may have been born in the August of that year.

He was recuited to the 1st Bombay European Regiment in Dec 1840 in Dublin, survived several years of Indian wars, rose to Sergeant, eventually purchasing his discharge in 1853. He married an Irish woman in India, and they had one child.

I came across a Find My Past death record which make me wonder if my ancestor returned to Athy from India. Or is it by coincidence an unrelated John Murphy of similar age?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish register for Athy is online bu there is a gap between November 1816 and December 1821 which would appear to include John's baptismal record. You can get a copy of that death record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show where the deceased lived, cause of death and the name of the informant and sometimes the relationship of the informant to the deceased. The Athy registration district covers about 12 civil parishes. Let me know if you need instructions for getting a copy of the record.
